To show appreciation to the people of Cape Town, espAfrica – the organisers of the annual Cape Town Jazz Festival (CTIJF) – are once again hosting the Cape Town International Jazz Festival free community concert on Tuesday, 20 March, at Greenmarket Square.
The festival, proudly supported by the Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID), has once again curated an incredible line-up of artists to serenade Capetonians and give them a get a taste of world-class performances, at no charge, in the heart of the Central City.
This year, thousands of music lovers can look forward to being entertained by British acid jazz band, Incognito, award-winning South African a cappella group, The Soil, and Cape Town’s very own and one of South Africa’s most talented artists, Claire Phillips from Belhar.
In addition, Cape Town’s Jarrad Ricketts, who was crowned as the winner of the 3rd annual esp Young Legends 2018 Competition, will take to the stage, along with DJ Eazy and the All Star Band.
The pre-festival free community concert has been an annual feature of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and is as old as the festival itself, which celebrates its 19th anniversary this year at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on 23 and 24 March.
In summing up this year’s line-up for both the pre-festival free community concert and the main event, Billy Domingo, festival director, says: “The 2018 offering encompasses the full scale of the jazz genre. This line-up showcases diverse cultures and musical styles to reveal the complexity of the music, to inspire, uplift and energise. It’s an exciting programme with something for everyone – loyal festinos and new visitors to the festival.”
The concert at Greenmarket Square starts at 16h30 and, as usual, the CCID’s Safety and Security team will be deployed around the venue to provide top-up services to those delivered by the CCID’s primary safety partners – the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement agency and the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Other supporters of the 19th Cape Town International Jazz Festival Free Community Concert organised by espAfrika, include the Department of Arts and Culture, Independent Media, AYO Technology Solutions, the City of Cape Town, South Atlantic Arts & Culture Trust and Coca-Cola.
