A comic book showcasing common tricks that criminals use to get away with petty crime is set to hit the streets of Cape Town.
Set around an animated CCTV camera named Vision, the comic raises awareness of the risks faced by visitors and locals in Cape Town. It incorporates real footage captured on some of the more than 300 closed-circuit television cameras located around the city and repurposed into a comic book format.
Six types of petty crime are featured, and Vision gives clear, actionable advice on how to reduce your chances of becoming a victim of these kinds of crime.
The idea was germinated by The Safety Lab, a cross-sector “ideas lab” set up to conceptualise, design and test innovative safety and security solutions applicable to the Western Cape. They do this by being “evidence-based, explicitly experimental and intent on challenging the status quo constructively”.
The Safety Lab is currently funded by the Western Cape Government. Other core partners include the Cape Town Partnership and the Cape Town Central City Improvement District who function as the Lab’s incubation hub, the University of Cape Town’s Centre of Criminology as well as an ever-broadening circle of “friends of the Lab” who will hopefully include you.
The awareness project will launch on Wednesday 19 December with the CCTV comic-style booklets distributed across the Cape Town CBD and at key city access intersections and train stations.
